Do Squirrels Kill Other Small Animals?

Squirrels are small to medium sized Volusia County rodents, living all around the globe with the exception of polar caps. These little pesky creatures often live in the areas close to human homes and may enter and nest inside human homes as well. They usually nest in the attics, basements or in the walls, wherever they can find a remote, undisturbed place to build a nest and have young. The nesting area should also have direct access to food and water. Their path towards food, just like any other Florida rodent, is straight forward line there and back.

Squirrel diet
Volusia County squirrels are omnivores, using their strong teeth to nibble on the food or any other materials in order to sharpen their ever-growing teeth. They need to keep their strong incisors properly treated as they may become a potential health threat to the animal if they grow too much, they can start to bend towards the back of squirrel’s head. These animals have problems digesting the cellulose and therefore they need to eat the food reach in protein, carbs, and fats.

Their usual diet consists mainly of:
• various sorts of nuts
• seeds
• fruits
• fungi
• and other green vegetation

Squirrels may encounter some problems regarding the food in early spring, due to the fact that buried food starts to sprout and it´s no longer at squirrel’s disposal. At that time, Florida squirrels need to find another kind of food to survive. That is usually the time when squirrels eat also:
• eggs were stolen from another animal
• small rodents (mice, rats, rabbits)
• baby birds
• insects
• young snakes

Lack of food is not the only time that Volusia County squirrels eat meat. Some females, especially, have a higher need for protein oriented food. When examining the content of digested food, while performing studies in squirrels, meat particles have been found in almost every case. Since predatory behavior has been determined with only a few species of squirrels, they mostly eat dying all already dead animals. Sometimes squirrel may eat a poisoned mouse for example and pay its lethal toll for that as well.

The Florida squirrels can be both useful and a nuisance concerning their food habits. Squirrels are natural distributors of seeds as they disperse the fruit seeds and fungal spores during the process of eating. That can definitely qualify as a positive impact on humans. The peskier one is of course well known to the gardeners or farmers. These pesky little creatures just love to dig in the ground and hide or gather food for winter and they usually do it all over the area of their habitat. However, storing their food is happening all over the year, not only in months before winter. While digging their food in the ground they also dig up a lot of freshly planted bulbs. And what a joy for Volusia County squirrels that is. What could taste better than a fresh, sweet flower bulb? Unfortunately, this squirrel habit definitely qualifies as a negative impact on human life.
